On a beautiful Saturday evening with temperatures in the high 70's to low 80's, the first MUSA Kickball pitch at Helfaer field, since it's opening, was rolled. The consulation game got underway at around 4:30pm, with tournament teams Slow and Bouncy and the Juggernauts taking on the task of being the first teams to play MUSA kickball at the new park. S & B headed up the match, by beating out the Juggernauts, 4 - 3.

Excitement filled the air as the crowd grew in numbers during the Tournament Championship game, which featured the Los Super Gatos against Magoo's. Magoo's shut out the Gatos, 2-0, and took home the braggin' rites as the summer tournament champs.

There was a break in action after the championship game, which gave the one man field crew a chance to get the field ready for the Kickin' It 4 Kids Celebrity All-star game, held at 7:30pm, featuring, Big Brother / Big Sisters as this years charity.

With a crowd of well over 200 strong and featured celebrities, Keith Tozer (Head Coach of the Milwaukee Wave), Lance Allen (TMJ4 sports reporter), Art Kumbalek (writer for the Shepherd Express), Bango (the Milwaukee Bucks Mascot), Brad Beach (the Mascot of the Milwaukee Wave), Aimee Gorski, Mandy Tarrantino, Danielle Kerry (of the Milwaukee Bucks Energy Dance Team) and Pat White (player for the Milwaukee Wave) the game got underway.

And oh what a game it was!

With Heath's Heros scoring 11 runs and Dave's Red Rovers scoring another 7, there was plenty of action on the field as well as off. Featured musician, Uncle Kenny, played his accordion throughout the game to help keep the excitment in the air. He had players and fans alike doing the polka between innings and even after the game.

The game was full of every aspect you would expect from a MUSA kickball event. From in-the-park home runs, close plays at the plate, plenty of smak talk, man-bunting, to mishaps in the outfield and even a flip into home plate by Bango to score one of the first runs of the game...

...Oh, what a great night it was, kickball fans!!

And to top off the event Big Brother / Big Sisters went home the real winner, with over $1,000 in donations and numerous MUSA participants signing up to potentially be a Big Brother or Big Sister to some lucky kid out there. How could the night of been better?!

Special thanks to Michelle Sweeney for coming out to the event and helping MUSA raise money for her charity.

Thank you, to all that participated, donated time and/or money or just came for the festivities, with out any of you, there would be no MUSA.

See you all in the fall,

Mike "the Ump/Manitor" Glass

A little about Helfaer field:

Featuring 502 bleacher seats and additional concourse seating of 220, this will be the premier location for youth baseball and girls softball leagues to host their championship games and tournaments. The fences will reach 200 feet with walls at six foot heights with the exception of left field where the wall will be nine feet. The $3.1 million facility is being built through a $2 million charitable grant from the Helfaer Foundation as well as $1.1 million from the Miller Park infrastructure budget. The Evan and Marion Helfaer Foundation was founded on February 2, 1974 and is dedicated to charitable, religious and educational purposes in Wisconsin and the greater Milwaukee area. Mr. Helfaer was also an original investor in the Brewers. Designed by Eppstein-Uhen Architects of Milwaukee, Helfaer Field is being built on the site of County Stadium by Hunzinger Construction, the company that built the original County Stadium and was a part of the team that built beautiful Miller Park. Helfaer Field will be a smoke-free facility.
